Geneva, the city of watches
The luxury watchmaking industry is an important economic sector in Geneva. Its origins date back to the 15th century. The city’s ideal geographic location proved favourable to the industry’s development and growth. In the 16th century, the reformer John Calvin paved the way for what would become the modern watchmaking industry. At the time, many goldsmiths plied their craft in the city. Since displaying wealth and wearing jewellery was forbidden under the strict rules of the Reformation, the artisans had to come up with an alternative outlet for their creativity. And thus the watchmaking industry was born, laying the foundations for watchmaking throughout Switzerland. Today, Swiss watches continue to enjoy an undiminished reputation for outstanding quality.
Many luxury watch manufacturers are based in Geneva, such as Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, Baume & Mercier and Patek Philippe. Boutiques, a large flower clock and many small details constantly remind the visitor of the importance of watchmaking to the city.
